Designed and crafted by our master jeweler Brandon Nava, this piece is participating in the 87th National Silversmithing Competition within the framework of the 2024 National Silver Fair in the sculpture category.
The sculpture "Reflection", inspired by the surreal and emotional work of Tim Burton, is a profound representation of the complex human condition. This work, made of silver plate, presents a mysterious face that invites us to reflect on the duality between reality and fantasy.
The veil covering the lips, created by the texture of the silver plate, symbolizes uncertainty. This element suggests that the truth of our being is hidden behind a layer of appearances. This idea relates to the film producer's philosophy that explores our darkest emotions, validating feelings that are difficult to express through our mouths. As he says: "Art is a way of expressing what cannot be said."
The three silver butterflies that emulate being in flight are born on the right side of the face where the texture of the metal seems to tear to give shape to the butterflies, they represent freedom and transformation. These creatures symbolize the human capacity to transcend and overcome physical or emotional limitations. We can see this idea in his film "Edward Scissorhands" where no matter how different we may be, the individual is responsible for creating his own identity and finding the meaning of his life.
The silver wire mask on the left side of the face suggests concealment. This element represents the tension between the truth of our being and the appearance we give to the world, between reality and fantasy. The lizard hanging from the silver wire frame symbolises change and rebirth, as it can shed its skin and regenerate its limbs. In Burton's world, his characters often struggle to find their place in a world that values appearance over essence.
The renowned film director's philosophy is reflected in his works through themes and styles that explore the complexity of the human condition. He often focuses on marginalized characters, highlighting the beauty in peculiarity, thus questioning social standards, combining dark and surreal elements, reality and imagination, nostalgia and the sensitivity of our most endearing emotions.
"Imagination is a gift. It is a way to escape from reality, but also to confront it." Tim Burton.
"More than jewelry, it's art."
